Loskop Dam Fishing & Angling Information & Tips
The Superb Fishing Destination: Loskopdam in the Mpumalanga Province Of South Africa
Loskop
Dam is one of my favourite
freshwater venues to fish in South Africa... Its a nature reserve
and Forever Resort with camping facilities, chalets, conference rooms,
restaurant, shop, swimming pools, putt putt course and of course
angling! I have been fishing Loskop Dam for many years now on boat and
from the bank but mainly as a bank angler. This page has general
information about Loskop Dam fishing and fish species...
Fish Species At Loskop Dam
The
freshwater fish species at Loskop Dam are so diverse and the bank
angling opportunities are tremendous, if you have a boat it is better
however as one can fish the inlets and dam wall for monster Carp, Barbel
and Mudfish. A lot of the time you will need to create a large feeding
area for a couple of days to bring the big carp into the shallower
water. You will catch big Blue Kurper and Barbel from the bank. And when
fishing the baits that you use is really up to you! Every Carp and
Yellowfish method I have used has worked really well at Loskopdam!
Barbel on the other hand have been tricky and the only success I've had
has been on small Carp head. I don't cut up Carp anymore
so I will have
to look for other methods. Apparently chicken livers work really well in
the deeper sections of the dams so they should work well off the bank.
The Common & Mirror Carp can be wild at times and I will never forget
when we caught 65 fish in the space of 5 hours. In the same spot I was
spooled later that evening by probably a big Barbel. For Blue and Canary
Kurper artlure is the way to go but as it gets colder earthworms and a
big float will be the best baits fished up against the reeds. Here is an
article showing what
Carp
baits I was using during this period... You will not catch too many
monster Carp from the bank at Loskopdam unless you feed the area for a
few days constantly. Below is a list of the fish species that occur in
Loskop Dam:
- Common Carp
- Mirror Carp
- Grass Carp
- Red Breast Kurper
- Blue Kurper
- Canary Kurper
- Largescale Yellowfish
- Barbel
- Makriel
- Mudfish
- Papermouth
- Three Spot Barb
- Bass species and many others...
Angling Techniques At Loskop Dam
Any form of freshwater fishing can be practiced
at Loskop Dam, from
artlure for Kurper to
Fly fishing for Yellowfish to specimen angling for
Carp to spinning or
dropshotting for Bass. Its a great family destination with
potentially some great fishing. Don't get despondent if you don't catch
big carp at first there are a lot of carp between 500 grams and 2kgs
that will eat your baits initially along the banks. Patience will pay
off! Fishing off a boat will offer more rewards at Loskop Dam and you
should get some really big fish... Have a look at this page on
