Highveld Trout Fishing At Millstream Farm Mpumalanga South Africa
Millstream Farm: A Fly Fisherman's Dream!
I have been fortunate enough to visit a lovely South African Trout
venue called Millstream Farm since I was very small. Millstream is my
favourite fly fishing venue and it is based close to the small town of
Dullstroom in the Mpumalanga Province in South Africa... Millstream Farm
is over 400 hectares in size and has many weirs, dams and lakes to
choose from when looking for that prize Trout. Dullstroom has many great
Fly
Fishing destinations but this place must be one of the best! Not
only does Millstream have well stocked bodies of water full of Trout,
but it also has amazing rustic cottage accommodation with beautiful
interiors and comfortable beds. It makes you feel like you are in the
middle of nowhere but you are in full luxury. There are so many
activities to participate in at Millstream besides the amazing Fly
Fishing...
- Horse Riding
- Nature Walks
- Bird Watching
- Game Viewing
- Children's Play Area
- Tennis
- Squash
- Ping Pong
- TV Room and many many more!

The Fly Fishing At Millstream
Now that you have gotten to know
Millstream a bit more, lets talk about the fishing at this venue... Fly
Fishing is the only form of angling allowed here and no spinning or bait
is permitted. You are allowed to catch and release in all the dams,
weirs and lakes except 2 Dams which are trophy dams and are strictly
catch and release. Each cottage gets a bag limit of how many fish they
are allowed to keep during their stay, the limits vary depending on the
size of the cottage... If you want to keep more Trout than what your
limit allows you to you pay per kilogram. Millstream boasts good
populations of
Rainbow
Trout between 200 grams and 4 kilograms... There is the occasional
Golden Trout which gets stocked with the Rainbow Trout and the Brown
Trout can be caught in the bigger dams...
Vlei Kurper
are also amongst the fish
species at Millstream but these are not stocked and are spooked
easily therefore they hardly take a fly.
Since
all these lakes, dams and weirs at Millstream are fed by small streams
you are fly fishing in still water... Any fly techniques will work here
but these are some that I have found more effective than others:
- Floating line, 12 foot leader with a dry fly and a buzzer as a dropper
- Floating line, Two dry flies on a 10 foot leader
- Floating line, 15 foot leader, and two nymphs, one with a bead and one that is "weightless"
- Sinking line with a 4 foot leader slow retrieve on the bottom
- Sinking line with a 6 foot leader very fast retrieve after sunset and before sunrise
The Best Flies To Be Used At Millstream Farm
"All flies eventually work when you cast them enough times" is what
my father used to say about the guys who walk around Millstream all day,
retrieve until they are blue in the face and catch a fish or 2... There
are certain flies that work very well in the weirs and larger bodies of
water in Millstream, these are my personal favourites:
Dry Fly
RAB, Royal Wulff, Goddard's Sedge, DDD, Yellow Humpey, Royal Coachman, Grey Wulff, Floating Ant, Adams...
Nymphs
Olive
Flashback Nymph, GRHE, Czech Nymph, PTN, Caddis Nymph, Brassie, San Juan
Worm, Orange Buzzer...
Wet Fly
Zulu, Black Woolly Bugger, Walkers Killer, Mrs. Simpson, Olive Woolly Bugger, Woolly Worm, White Death...
Millstream is a great Trout Fly Fishing hotspot... Enjoy your time on the water and remember "Tight Lines!"
